Bee Gees from 1978

February 25, 1978 - 43 Years Ago Today: Five songs written and co-written by Barry Gibb were in the Top Ten on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. The songs: "Stayin' Alive," by the Bee Gees was in its fourth and final week at No. 1 written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb; "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water," recorded by Andy Gibb was at No. 2 ready to take over the top spot the following week written by Barry Gibb and Andy Gibb; "Emotion," recorded by Samantha Sang was still climbing and at No. 5 written by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb; "Night Fever," recorded by the Bee Gees was on the rise at No. 8 written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and finally, former No. 1 single, "How Deep Is Your Love," recorded by the Bee Gees was at No. 10 written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb. The trend of five Gibb songs in the Top Ten continued for an additional two weeks and then on March 25, 1978, four of the previous songs still occupied the Top Ten (minus "How Deep Is Your Love") when "If I Can't Have You," entered the Top Ten, written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and on its way to No. 1. Each one of those songs were No. 1 singles with the exception of "Samantha Sang's "Emotion, which topped out at No. 3. This was the first time one songwriter (or group, Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb) occupied the Top Ten since The Beatles held the Top 5 positions on the Hot 100 chart week-ending April 4, 1964. Interestingly enough, on May 27, 1978, while two Gibb songs still occupied the Top Ten on the Hot 100, "If I Can't Have You" and "Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing," written by Barry, Robin & Maurice Gibb and Andy Gibb, Frankie Valli had the Hot Shot Debut at No. 69 with the title song to the motion picture, "Grease," which was written by Barry Gibb and began a two-week run at No. 1 on August 26, 1978. During an eight-month period beginning in the Christmas season of 1977, six songs written by the brothers held the No. 1 position on the Hot 100 chart for 25 of the following 32 weeks—three of their own releases, two for brother Andy Gibb, and the Yvonne Elliman single. In the final analysis, the Bee Gees were responsible for six No. 1 singles in the calendar year of 1978 as well as having the No.'s 1, 2 and 4 Hot 100 singles of the year, "Night Fever," "Shadow Dancing" and "Stayin' Alive," respectively. In total, the Gibbs placed 13 singles onto the Hot 100 in 1978, with 12 making the Top 40. The soundtrack, "Saturday Night Fever," was also the No. 1 album of the year with a 24-week run at No. 1 winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. The Bee Gees were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and were the recipients of the Grammy Legend Award in 2003 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
